You open a PDF and it’s sideways. The text runs from bottom to top. Or the page is upside down. Or half the pages are landscape and the other half are portrait and you’re turning your head like you’re watching a tennis match.
This happens all the time with scanned documents. Someone fed the paper into the scanner at the wrong angle and the resulting PDF has pages going every direction. Or a document was designed in landscape but your viewer opens it in portrait. Or someone exported a spreadsheet to PDF and it came out rotated 90 degrees.
Rotating a PDF page takes about 5 seconds. You can rotate all pages at once or just the ones that are wrong.
Why PDFs open sideways
Scanner orientation. The most common cause. A stack of pages fed through a document scanner — some went in landscape, some portrait, some were flipped. The scanner doesn’t know or care about orientation. It scans whatever’s in front of it.
Phone camera rotation. You photographed documents with your phone and converted to PDF. The phone’s orientation sensor was off, or you held the phone at a weird angle. The resulting PDF pages have mixed orientations.
Spreadsheet exports. Excel spreadsheets with wide columns export to PDF in landscape mode by default. But if the export settings weren’t configured right, the PDF might show the landscape content in a portrait frame — making it sideways.
Combined PDFs from multiple sources. You merged several PDFs into one and the source documents had different orientations. The merged PDF has a mix of portrait and landscape pages.
How to rotate a PDF (free options)

Rotating individual pages vs all pages
If every page in the PDF is sideways, rotate all pages at once. One click, done.
If only some pages are wrong (pages 3, 7, and 12 are landscape in a portrait document), rotate just those pages individually. Click the rotation button on each affected page’s thumbnail. The rest stay as they are.
This is the scenario that frustrates people the most — a 20-page scanned document where 15 pages are fine and 5 are sideways. You don’t want to rotate the whole thing because that would mess up the 15 good pages. You need per-page control.
90° vs 180° vs 270°
Rotate 90° clockwise: Page turns a quarter turn to the right. Use this when the page is sideways with the top of the content pointing left.
Rotate 90° counterclockwise (270° clockwise): Page turns a quarter turn to the left. Use this when the top of the content points right.
Rotate 180°: Page flips upside down. Use this when the entire page is upside down — text reads from right to left, bottom to top.
If you’re not sure which direction, just try 90° clockwise. If it’s still wrong, try again. Three rotations of 90° clockwise equals one rotation of 90° counterclockwise. You’ll get there.
Common situations
Scanned contracts and forms. An office scanned a signed contract. Half the pages went through the feeder straight, half went sideways. The attorney needs the whole document oriented correctly before filing.
Receipts and invoices. You scan receipts for expense reports or bookkeeping. Some receipts are printed landscape, some portrait. The scanned PDF has mixed orientations. Rotate the sideways ones so everything reads consistently.
Presentations converted to PDF. A PowerPoint in landscape mode exported to PDF. But the PDF viewer displays it portrait. Rotate to landscape so it matches the original slide layout.
Architectural and engineering drawings. Plans and blueprints are landscape documents. When emailed as PDFs they sometimes open portrait. Rotate so the drawing displays correctly.
Bank statements and financial documents. Some banks generate statements in landscape for wide tables. The PDF might need rotation to read properly, especially when printing.
Does rotating affect the content?
No. Rotating a page changes its orientation but doesn’t alter the content. Text, images, tables, signatures — everything stays the same. The page just turns. Like turning a piece of paper in your hand.
File size stays virtually the same. No quality loss. No reformatting.
Rotating for printing
If you’re rotating a PDF specifically for printing, make sure your printer settings match the page orientation. A landscape page should be printed in landscape mode, and a portrait page in portrait mode.
Most modern printers auto-detect orientation, but if pages are printing with cut-off edges or excessive margins, check the printer orientation setting.
The “View Rotation” trap
This catches a lot of people. Adobe Acrobat Reader and Microsoft Edge let you rotate the view of a PDF — the page appears rotated on your screen. But when you save or close the file, the rotation reverts. It’s temporary.
To permanently rotate a PDF, you need a tool that modifies the page’s rotation metadata in the PDF file itself. Online tools and Acrobat Pro do this. Preview on Mac does this. Free Acrobat Reader and Edge do not.
If you rotate the view, email the PDF, and the recipient opens it — they’ll see the original sideways orientation. The rotation only existed on your screen.

Can I rotate a single page in a multi-page PDF?
Yes. Most tools show thumbnails of every page. Click the rotation button on the specific page you want to rotate. Other pages remain unchanged.
Why doesn’t “Rotate View” in Acrobat Reader save permanently?
Acrobat Reader is a free viewer, not an editor. View rotation is a display-only feature. Permanent rotation requires modifying the PDF file, which Adobe reserves for the paid Acrobat Pro.
Can I rotate a password-protected PDF?
Remove the password first, then rotate.
Does rotating change the page size?
No. The page dimensions stay the same — width and height just swap. An 8.5″×11″ portrait page rotated 90° becomes an 11″×8.5″ landscape page.
